BOLIVIA : State of alert declared due to expected heavy rains

As of 6 December , officials have declared a red alert in some regions of Cochabamba department while La Paz has been placed on a yellow alert. According to officials, up to 1.270 families have been affected so far by heavy rains causing flash floods in several municipalities, mainly across the east of the country.

PERU: Floods Reported in San Martin

As of 30 November, floods have been reported in St Martin department. A preliminary assessment by the regional government estimated that at least 5,000 people have been affected and some 10,000 hectares of paddy fields were destroyed. Recent reports state that it has stopped raining and water levels have started to fall.

KENYA : Localised flooding on Tana River

As of 30 November, flooding has displaced some 700 households along the Tana River in southeastern Kenya. Worst affected areas are Hewani and the vicinity of Mnazini Bahati Village in Garsen Division. Flooding is a perennial issue along the Tana River system, and the situation warrants monitoring for signs of deterioration.

ALGERIA: Floods hit the country

As of 30 November, a total of 10 Algerians died after heavy rains and floods ravaged parts of the country. Damage to infrastructure and public utilities has been reported, with the coastal town of Dellys worst affected.

KOSOVO , SERBIA , MONTENEGRO : Flooding affects thousands

As of 29 November, floods caused by heavy rains over the last two days have affected an estimated 3,500 people in Kosovo. Several rivers have broken their banks destroying houses and agricultural land and causing shortage of water and electricity supply. Access to some areas has reportedly been cut by floodwaters. IFRC warns of the potential for severe impact on socio-economic conditions in the region . Meanwhile, approximately 10,000 people have been affected in southern Serbia, with severe damage reported in both rural and urban areas. Flooding due to heavy rains and melting snow has also destroyed more than a hundred houses in northern Montenegro, with authorities of Rozaje town declaring a state of emergency.

Bangladesh : Second round of floods affects the country

As of 19 September, more than 1 million people have been evacuated or are stranded as major rivers have risen due to torrential rains over the country . According to officials, the Brahmaputra River is above danger level in 17 places in the central region. UNICEF warns that the second round of floods could be very serious noting that the newly rebuilt embankments could be washed away and that more than a million hectares of cropland are now in jeopardy unless the waters start falling.

Philippines : Floods following Typhoon Wipha

As of 19 September, a state of emergency has been declared in the towns of Valladolid and San Enrique, in central Philippines , due to floods brought by Typhoon Wipha. An estimated 6,000 families have been affected and damages to crops and infrastructure reported. According to officials, heavy rains are forecast for coming days, and further flooding is expected across Western Visayas and in Northern Metro Manila.

Rwanda/DR Congo : Rains displace thousands near western border

As of 14 September, Rwandan media report thousands of people to have been displaced and 15 killed by flooding and landslides in Western Province. At least 1,000 houses are reported to have been destroyed following heavy rains in the districts of Nyabihu and Rubavu. Reuters has also reported hailstorms and landslides in Northern Province, and puts the number of displaced at 1,000. More displacements are anticipated as rain continues. Rubavu shares a border with DR Congo near to Goma, North Kivu, where tens of thousands of people are reported to have been displaced by recent fighting.

Ghana : More than 260,000 people affected by floods, access problems

As of 14 September, following an earlier report, Government figures indicate that in northern Ghana flooding has affected more people than in all other West African countries combined , although the disaster has received little international attention. According to the government's National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), between 260,000 and 275,000 people in the three Northern Regions plus one district in Western Region have been affected. Most of the affected people are reported to be displaced. A state of emergency was declared on 12th September. Priority needs are drugs, food and technical/logistics support. According to the Ministry of the Interior, the floods have killed at least 20 people and destroyed bridges linking Ghana to its neighbouring countries, causing access problems. In addition, thousands of hectares of farmland have been destroyed. Although the Government has not yet requested international assistance, WFP is closely monitoring the situation and together with UNICEF conducting a needs assessment in the affected regions.

South Asia: New displaced by floods

As of 14 September, new flooding and landslides triggered by torrential rains have caused additional deaths and displacements in South Asia . In Bangladesh more than half a million people have been newly displaced or marooned in the past week. According to forecast, the monsoon is still very active in the Gange-Padma basin and the flood situation in Southern-central part of the country is expected to deteriorate in the next 24-48 hours. In India , hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated due to fresh floods in Assam , West Bengala , Bihar , Uttar Pradesh, Meghalaya and Aruunachal Pradesh. In Nepal , fresh flooding and landslides have displaced more than 3,000 people in southern area, where more than a dozen villages have been inundated.

Uganda : Thousands displaced by renewed flooding

As of 11 September, Following recent reports, thousands of people have been newly displaced by renewed flooding in recent days. Media report up to 100,000 people to be displaced in Teso sub-region alone, though it is not clear how many had been displaced by previous flooding. IDP camps and transport infrastructure in the region have been affected, with damage hampering delivery of relief items and the movement of displaced people. Officials have stated that local food production has been affected, and further food shortages are a possible outcome.

Thailand : Several provinces at risk of floods

As of 10 September, the Thai Meteorological Department has warned residents in 11 northern and northeastern provinces of possible flash flooding over the next days.

Togo : Floods Displacing at least 7,000 People in Vulnerable Savanes Region

As of 6 September , flooding has displaced more than 7,000 people and affected many more in recent days in the Savanes region of north-eastern Togo , which according to recent UN studies is the country's poorest region with "alarming" rates of acute child malnutrition. Floods are reported to have washed out roads and bridges, completely cutting access to about half of Kpendjal prefecture, which has a population of an estimated 123,000. Other prefectures affected are Oti, Tône and Tandjouaré. Government officials in Kpendjal in a report issued on 3 September said the destruction of crops will cause great suffering for the population. Local officials and health workers in the Savanes region said people in the flood-affected areas urgently need tents, food, water, medicines, mosquito nets, salt, petrol and matches.

Ethiopia : 136,000 affected, 36,000 displaced by floods thus far

As of 4 September , OCHA reports approximately 136,000 people in Amhara, Afar, Gambella, SNNP and Tigray Zones to be currently affected by flooding, of which 36,000 have been displaced. The current Kiremt season rains typically run from June to September in most parts of Ethiopia . Government and humanitarian joint contingency plans anticipate relief and recovery assistance will be required for 324,000 people this season under the most likely scenario.

Haiti: Floods may affect crops

As of 23 August, strong winds and rains associated with hurricane Dean have caused localized flooding, structural damage and at least four deaths in coastal towns. It is likely that these conditions will have an impact on the second season crops, moreover. Approximately 1150 homes have been destroyed, and over 8200 people are reportedly residing in temporary shelters, mostly in the south and the west of the country. Significant impacts to Haitian agricultural, livestock and fishing industries has been reported.

Somalia : Floods affecting vulnerable Shabelle Region

As of 23 August, Somalia's Shabelle River, which passes through Middle Shabelle province in south-central Somalia has reportedly spilled over its bank submerging farming areas in at least two villages in the province. The floods are reported to have displaced hundreds of families and destroyed farms and property in the affected areas. Flooding is exacerbating the already vulnerable situation in the Shabelle region, which hosts an estimated 325,000 internally displaced people (IDPs).

Thailand : Floods continue affecting southern provinces

As of 22 August, a flash flood warning was issued for seven southern coastal provinces on Tuesday 21 August after floods hit the provinces of Phang Nga and Surat Thani. About 2,000 households in Phang and 500 homes in Surat Thani were flooded. According to the Meteorological Department the southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand will continue to unleash heavy rain in many parts of the country.

Myanmar: Tens of thousands of people displaced by flooding

As of 21 August tens of thousands of people have been displaced by flooding in Myanmar 's Irrawaddy River . Local officials and residents say at least 18 villages are under water. It is reported that about 10,000 houses have been hit by the floods, schools are closed and about 40,000 hectares of rice paddies have been destroyed. According to local reports, neither national authorities nor the Red Cross have been in the area and the displaced villagers have to fend for themselves.

East Africa: Hundreds of Thousands Displaced in Uganda, Kenya and Sudan

As of 20 August, media cite the Ugandan Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees as stating that some 150,000 people are estimated to be displaced by flooding in the east of the country. Reports indicate that Kumi, Soroti, Bukedea, Amuria, Katakwi, Bududa, Bukwo, Mbale and Kapchorwa are the worst affected districts. Government relief operations are to begin ferrying food to the region today, with local officials also appealing for non-food assistance. Rains in affected areas are expected to continue until late September.Neighbouring regions in Kenya have also been affected, with local officials appealing for food assistance for up to 40,000 people. Kenyan Red Cross has warned of the danger of further flooding along the River Nzoia. In Sudan , at least 150,000 people have been displaced and an additional 215,000 people affected by the ongoing floods. Moreover, crops, food stocks, farmlands and livestock have been affected.

Philippines : Typhoon Sepat affects hundreds of thousands

As of 20 August, Officials report that over 130,000 families have been affected by heavy rains and floods caused by Typhoon Sepat in the northern Philippines . Some 5,700 persons have reportedly been displaced and are living in evacuation centres. The Philippine weather agency states that Sepat will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon, bringing additional rains to Luzon and the western part of the Visayas in the coming days.

Nepal : Monsoon Floods Displace Thousands

As of 17 August , more than 362,000 people in 37 districts are reported to be displaced after floods strike the southern Nepal . Worst affected areas reportedly include Mahottari, Siraha and Jhapa districts and the Terai Region. According to the Nepal Red Cross Society, thousands of families are still unable to return home and are with health problems being reported due to lack of food and proper shelter. Children and the elderly are most at risk.

Pakistan : Flood Survivors in Need of Assistance

As of 17 August , an estimated 8,200 people in 16 villages in Sindh province have been affected by floodwater caused by the monsoon rains. According to a local NGO, the affected population lacks shelter, food and drinking water and does not have access to link roads. Four villages are reported to be completely under water. The country was already affected by monsoon rains and cyclone Yemyin in late June and July, which displaced an estimated 370,000 persons and affected some 2,5 million people.

Colombia : Thousands affected by floods

As of 17 August , according to official data issued by the National Directorate for Disasters Prevention and Response , 121 persons have died, 22 are missing and more than 652,400 people have been affected by floods since the rainy season began in March. Nearly 25% of the country’s municipalities report events associated to disasters caused by heavy rains although the worst affected areas are the northern provinces of Corboba, Bolivar, Choco, Sucre and Antigua . The dry season has already established over the Andean region, nevertheless the water level of Sinú and San Jorge Rivers remains high and the Cauca River has burst its banks.

China: Worst Floods in 50 Years, 120 Million People Affected

As of 17 August (update), more than 120 million have been affected by floods since mid-June. An estimated five million people have been left homeless, with more than 1000 reported dead or missing. Since the start of June 2007 heavy rain has pounded most parts of the Huaihe River, southern Yangzi River and south western part of China, and even the north western part of China . The continuous torrential rain has led to devastating flash floods, landslides and mudflows. Flood affected areas include Guangdong, Yunnan, Guangxi, Guizhou, Sichuan, Henan, Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei, Hunan, Inner Mongolia, Qinghai, Chongqing, Hebei, Shandong, etc. According to the latest situation, heading the list of worst hit flood-stricken areas are Chongqing (Municipality), Anhui and Jiangsu Provinces.

West Africa: Ongoing Floods Affecting Thousands of People across the Region

As of 16 August, following earlier reports, heavy seasonal rains have caused deadly and destructive flooding across West Africa. In Burkina Faso, a humanitarian crisis may be emerging with rains destroying people's homes and farmland in several areas across the country, the government's top crisis management expert said on 13 August. He said one of the worst-affected areas is the north province of Loroum, where flooding has washed away houses, schools and other infrastructure in 14 villages. In Niger, an estimated 20,000 people have been left homeless by rain and flood damage since July. In Mauritania , thousands of people are reported to have been forced from their homes in the south-eastern town of Tintane . In Nigeria, since 12 August an estimated 7,000 people have been forced from their homes in the central Plateau State, and thousands more in other parts of the country. The figures of affected people are estimations and likely to change rapidly. Other countries in the region affected by heavy rains and floods are Mali, Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal and Benin. More rains are expected in the region during the coming period.

DPR Korea: Preliminary Request for International Assistance as Severe Floods Affect an Estimated 63,000 Families

As of 14 August, DPR Korea has made a preliminary request for international assistance after it reported massive flooding had left hundreds of people dead or missing and swept away many buildings. According to the preliminary information available from different parts of the country an estimated 63,000 families have so far been affected by the severe floods. Tens of thousands of hectares of farmland are also reported to have been inundated. The flooding has hit most of the southern half of DPR Korea and includes the capital and some of its most productive agricultural regions. More rain is forecast for those areas over the next few days.

Caribbean: Tropical Depression 04 Expected to Develop into Hurricane

As of 14 August, tropical depression 04 has formed in the Atlantic Ocean and is moving westwards towards the Caribbean. At present the depression is expected to develop into a category 2 hurricane, though this prediction could change as time passes. The storm has the potential to bring heavy rains and high winds to the Caribbean region, including the lesser Antilles, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Haiti.

Papua New Guinea: Heavy rains affect thousands

As of 14 August, two people are reported to have been killed and 12,000 affected following floods and landslides in Morobe Province over the past five days. Three major rivers are reported to have burst their banks, damaging transport infrastructure. Meteorological officials expect rains to continue in the area for several more weeks.

Ecuador: Flooding in South

As of 14 August, flooding has been reported along the Zamora River following heavy rains in Zamora-Chinchipe Province. Hundreds of families are reported to have been evacuated in the cantons of Yanzatza and Zamora, though official figures are not yet available. Damage to crops and transport infrastructure has also been reported. Water levels are also rising along the Pastaza, Yanuncay and Puela river systems.

Nigeria: Floods Displace Thousands

As of 07 August, flooding across Nigeria has displaced over 5,000 people. Hundred of homes are reported submerged and some buildings have collapsed in Orgun and Lagos states, with Ogun state officials appealing for assistance. Floods have also affected Borno state in the northeast, with damage to homes and transport infrastructure, and three deaths reported thus far. In central Plateau state, at least 17 people have been killed and 13 villages reportedly destroyed.

Viet Nam, Cambodia, Laos: More Heavy Rain Expected as Thousands Flee Floods

As of 07 August, following recent reports, flooding has been reported in Cambodia and Viet Nam as tropical depression 06W makes its way along the Vietnamese coast. Heavy rains triggered floods in Vietnam's central region and the Central Highlands coffee belt, with m ore heavy rainfall expected coming days. In Cambodia , a nationwide flood warning has been issued following the displacement of thousands of families in Ratanakiri province. All roads into Ratanakiri have reportedly been rendered impassable, and damage has also been reported in Preah Vihear province . Waters flowing downstream are expected to lead to a high risk of flooding along the Mekong River system. Tropical depression 06W also has the potential to bring heavy rainfall to Laos.

Ethiopia: Flooding Spreads into Ethiopia

As of 02 August, following recent reports, FEWSNet reports that flooding in eastern Sudan has spread eastward into nearby parts of Ethiopia . In Gambela region some 12,000 people are reported displaced, though this number could rise as rescue teams reach the area. Additional rainfall is expected in eastern Ethiopia during the coming week, which could aggravate conditions.

Bangladesh : Millions Affected as Flooding Worsens

As of 01 August , at least 38 people are reported to have been killed and over 4.5 million displaced or marooned in their homes in northern and central Bangladesh . Major rivers have burst their banks, with severe flooding thus far affecting 36 of the country?s 64 districts. Some 250,000 houses and over 500,000 acres of crops have been completely or partially damaged. Officials report that Sirajganj and Kurigram districts are worst affected, with nearly all villages and towns submerged. A shortage of boats is hampering relief efforts, with approximately 500,000 people reported to be without access to food or clean water. According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center new areas in central and western parts of the country and in the eastern part of Dhaka City are likely to be inundated in coming days.

Indonesia: Floods and Landslides Affect Tens of Thousands, Scores Killed

As of 25 July, following recent reports, torrential rains since 22 July caused landslides and floods of up to three meters depth in Central Sulawesi and South Sulawesi provinces. Hundreds of homes have reportedly been submerged, with 66 people reported killed and 30,000 affected thus far, according to officials. Access to the disaster zone has been hampered by the destruction or submersion of roads and bridges, according to relief workers. Rescue work has also been slowed by a lack of access to heavy equipment in affected areas. Air drops of food aid have been suspended due to poor weather. In a separate situation some 4,300 people have been reported displaced by flooding in North Sumatra province.

India: Millions Displaced by Floods

As of 23 July, heavy rains and landslides have displaced more than eight million people since the start of this year's monsoon season in June, according to authorities in affected states. Northwestern Maharashtra state has been worst hit, with 362 recorded deaths. In southern Kerala state, 143 have been killed by floods and more than 27,000 displaced since the monsoon began. Severe flooding has also been recorded in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Gujarat. Heavy rains are forecast to continue in many affected areas.

Sudan: 2.4 Million Feared at Risk of Floods

As of 20 July, following recent reports, IFRC has cited meteorological forecasts that as many as 2.4 million people are at risk of flooding this season across 16 states in Sudan. The Sudanese Government is warning of critically high water levels along the NileRiver system and its tributaries. FEWSNet has forecast heavy rains for Darfur, Chad and northern Central African Republic over the next week. Ground access is predicted to become increasingly difficult in affected areas. Currently, Sudanese Government and IFRC estimates put the death toll from floods at over 50, with some 35,000 affected across 12 states, and between 18,000 and 25,000 houses damaged or destroyed.

Malaysia: Thousands Evacuated due to Floods in Johor

As of 07 December, some 3,700 people were evacuated due to flooding in Johor. The worst affected areas are Johor Baru and Segamat. The Malaysia Meteorological Services Department has issued flood alert for Kelantan and Terengganu as rain is forecast to continue until 08 December.

Angola: Flooding reported after Weeks of Rains

As of 06 December, FEWS Net reports that heavy rainfall in central Angola over the last several weeks. The organisation reports rainfall totals as much as six times above normal, causing localized damage to crops in affected areas. The situation warrants monitoring as the southern Africa rainy season progresses.

Colombia: Significant damage after two months of severe flooding

As of 06 December, reports state that around 850,000 people were affected by severe flooding in 83 municipalities in October and November. It was reported that at least 90 people died, some 260,000 people were displaced and 400,000 hectares of farmland were submerged. According to Dartmouth Flood Observatory, the floods started on 01 October and ended on 01 December.

Nicaragua: Damage from Hurricane Felix poses risk to food security

Ac of 10 September, the impact of Hurricane Felix in Nicaragua ’s northern districts is likely to have a negative impact on food security. Strong winds and flooding may have brought substantial damage to crops and livestock, thus affecting food reserves and impeding regular food access to poor households. Preliminary estimates indicate as many as 60,000 people affected by the storm in the northern districts, among the poorest in the country.

Chad: Camps in the east flooded

As of 5 September, heavy rains in eastern Chad have caused rivers to overflow, flooding several camps for IDPs and refugees from Sudan 's Darfur region. The worst hit area is Koukou, which is the site of a refugee camp housing some 11,000 people, around 6km east of the town of Goz Beida . According to UNHCR, the mud and straw shelters have been collapsing. IDPs and refugees have been moving to higher ground to escape the flood waters. Aid workers have difficulties accessing the people due to the high water levels ; however some supplies are reported to have been transported using camels and horses.

Southern Sudan: Flooding to Impact Food Security

As of 29 August, FEWS NET reports that ongoing flooding in Southern Sudan will affect food production and may extend the current hunger season. Displacement, crop losses and the delayed start of fishing and other livelihood activities are expected to increase the level of food insecurity in affected areas between September and December.

Yemen: Torrential Rains and Floods Destroyed Homes and Farms, Killed 50 people

As of 27 August , according to officials, about 50 people have died as a result of violent weather that has raged across Yemen since early August. T orrential rains and thunderstorms have destroyed homes and farms, injured people and killed livestock.

Bangladesh : Hundreds of thousands still homeless

As of 22 August, according to latest estimates, over 10 million people were affected and 447 reported killed after weeks of heavy monsoon rain flooded over 30 per cent of the country. Hundreds of thousand were reported to be homeless as 60,000 houses were severely damaged over 39 of the country’s 64 districts. Although officials report that further floods are not expected as Monsoon is less active over the country and the rivers’ level starts receding, approximately 225,500 people are still taking shelter in about 950 relief camps.

Atlantic Basin: Atlantic Hurricane Season Begins, Active Season Predicted

As of 01 June, the 2007 Atlantic Hurricane season begins today and runs until the end of November. Peak Atlantic hurricane activity is usually occurs between August and October. NOAA is predicting above-average hurricane activity this season, with 13 to 17 named storms, seven to 10 becoming hurricanes, and three to five of these expected to become major hurricanes of Category 3 strength or higher. Moreover, it is thought that La Niña conditions could develop in the next one to three months. If La Niña develops, storm activity is more likely to be in the upper end of the predicted range, with the potential for even higher activity depending on the strength of La Niña conditions. Conditions favor an above-normal season even if La Niña conditions do not develop, however.
